Writer & Copy Editor
“My faith demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I am, whenever I can, for as long as I can with whatever I have to try to make a difference.” — Jimmy Carter
My role at Letterpress is primarily journalistic; I write press releases and feature stories and assist with other writing projects. My copy editing experience provides Letterpress with an in-house grammar check and an experienced eye. Good writing is the mark of a successful business, and Letterpress is among the best.
During my 25 years as lifestyle editor for The Farmville Herald, I covered diverse topics from news and features to a weekly recipe column. (That one frequently got me into trouble — a missed ingredient and you’re toast — figuratively and literally!) My copy editing skills were also honed at the Herald three times a week (on deadline — the presses don’t wait)! Letterpress understands that in a world turning toward technology, grammar and syntax are still important.
For six years, I wrote cover stories and did magazine cover design and photography for Farmville the Magazine. The majority of my features focused on individuals or organizations that contributed to the community. For me, it was a personally gratifying way to give credit where credit is due. Letterpress does the same by featuring client-based stories and sharing them in creative and helpful ways.
A Few Things I’m Proud Of
- Honored with numerous awards in the Virginia Press Association contest for features, columns, photography and headline writing.
- Received the Virginia Press Women’s (now Virginia Professional Communicators) Sweepstakes Award for the most points in yearly statewide competition for 2005, 2006, 2007, 2011 and 2016.
- Won numerous awards in the National Federation of Press Women’s professional contest.
Just For Fun
Since we moved to the Farmville area in the 1980s, I’ve been known as the local goat lady. I’ve learned to love these crazy and highly intelligent creatures, and although I’m not milking or making cheese these days, I still have some goats in the pasture. My flexible schedule at Letterpress has also allowed me to be more involved in music. I'm a member of the Farmville United Methodist Church Choir and Handbell Choir, and I play the piano once a month at church. Additionally, I sing in the community choral group, the Commonwealth Chorale. So it’s goats, music and writing — what else is there in life?
